What is the concept of Qurbani according to Quran?
Qurbani, meaning offering, is the recognition of the sacrifice that was going to be made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) when he was going to give up his son, Ismail (AS), for the sake of Allah (SWT). During Qurbani, an animal is sacrificed, and the shares are divided.
Monetory Qurbani Donation:
Those eligible to perform Qurbani must either sacrifice an animal or donate an amount equal to the value of a sacrificial animal on the 10th, 11th, and 12th days of Dhul Hijjah, following the special Eid prayers. Monetary Qurbani donations are used to purchase and rear animals for sacrifice in underprivileged communities, ensuring that everyone can partake in a nutritious meal and the festivities of Eid al-Adha. This practice helps spread joy and sustenance during the celebration, promoting community and charity.
Understanding Qurbani Eligibility and Its Importance:
Whoever offers a sacrifice after the (Eid) prayer, has completed his rituals (of Qurbani) and has succeeded in following the way of the Muslims. (Bukhari)
Qurbani is required for every able-bodied Muslim who has reached puberty and meets the criteria for Zakat. By performing Qurbani, you help provide essential food for needy families during Eid. If you are eligible, your qurbani donation is greatly appreciated and helps spread joy and sustenance during the celebration.
Health and Quality Standards for Qurbani Animals:
When selecting an animal for sacrifice, ensure it is healthy and free from any illness or defects. The following criteria must be met:
- 1) The animal’s horns must be intact.
- 2) It should have at least half of its teeth.
- 3) It should not have lost more than a third of its ears or tail.
- 4) It must not be blind or have lost more than a third of its sight.
- 5) The animal should be able to walk without limping or lameness.
- 6) It must be well-fed and cared for, not thin or undernourished.
- 7) Qurbani animals can be either male or female.
Proper Procedure for Slaughtering a Qurbani Animal:
For a slaughter to be valid as Qurbani, the following rules must be followed:
- 1) Use a sharp knife to minimize pain and suffering.
- 2) Do not sharpen the knife in the presence of the animal.
- 3) Ensure no animal witnesses the slaughter of another.
- 4) Recite “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” during the sacrifice.
- 5)Wait until the animal’s body is completely cold before skinning.
